Kiwi options across the board in 2022 Melbourne Cup

30 October 2022

It might be Australia’s great race, but there are plenty of patriotic reasons for New Zealanders to get involved with TAB in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup - and this year, there is a brand-new Kiwi twist.

A million bets were placed on last year’s Cup, and $15 million was paid out in winnings to TAB punters last year, with Verry Elleegant’s win proving very popular with Kiwis.

But if punters can't find any of the New Zealand-bred horses or jockeys in their selections, they can still keep it Kiwi with a DIY Power Play. Kiwis love their DIY, and TAB has taken the concept to racing in a way that hasn’t been done before.

“With our DIY Power Plays, you can choose who you think will win the Melbourne Cup, who will finish in the top 5 or even the top 10, and combine horses together into one bet,” TAB NZ Chief Betting Officer Simon Thomas says.

“You can increase your payout depending on how confident you are - you can include a horse paying big odds to run in the top 10, or if you reckon today might be a good day for that outsider, select it to run in the top 5.

“With the big field and the unpredictability of the Melbourne Cup, you have a chance to have a Melbourne Cup to remember if the results go your way.”

Kiwi jockeys Michael Dee (aboard Lunar Flare) and Jason Collett (riding Montefilia) provide a talented two-pronged riding attack, while the New Zealand-bred horses include Turnbull Stakes winner Smokin’ Romans, who started out life at White Robe Lodge near the Otago town of Mosgiel.

Expat New Zealand trainers Bjorn Baker and Michael Moroney are represented by Arapaho and Emissary respectively in the great 3200-metre race, that starts at 5pm on Tuesday.
