Kiwi rugby league fans tend to sit in separate camps when it comes to the State of Origin but it seems TAB NZ customers only have eyes for New South Wales this year.
The annual three-game series between the two heavyweight rugby league states in Australia has captured the attention of New Zealand sports fans for much of its history with many league lovers deeply entrenched in Team Maroon (Queensland) or Team Blue (New South Wales).
However, the customers are telling TAB NZ a different story this year.
“Betting on tonight’s game in Sydney has been all one-way traffic for New South Wales,” TAB NZ General Manager Customer and Betting Simon Thomas says.
“More than 80% of the money placed on the game has been on New South Wales, whether as a single bet on the game itself or as part of a multi-leg bet.
“Our customers are expecting a close game though judging by the Winning Team and Margin market, with the most money placed on New South Wales to win by 1-12 points, closely followed by Queensland winning by 1-12 points.”
Special markets are available on the game including an option for any Penrith Panthers player to be the first try scorer ($5), which has proved popular with customers.
“The State of Origin creates a great sporting rivalry every year, and regardless of the result, we’ll have some happy customers when the final whistle is blown,” Simon Thomas says.
